Dear Autumn, I love writing books about mermaids, but I’m pretty sure I’m not a mermaid. Are you? Do you have a favorite Mermaid Tales book?
Ella, I’ve actually been having fun learning about the lady responsible for the covid vaccine. Dr. Katalin Kariko wouldn’t give up on the idea behind the molecule mRNA and it’s ability to help people. If she hadn’t kept trying in spite of everyone thinking she was nuts, we wouldn’t have the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine! Stay safe and wear a mask, Debbie
Dear Ella, It’s always great to hear from you. Take care of yourself and be happy. Your friend, Debbie
Dear Bently and Quincey, Thanks for your amazing new verse to the Mermaid Tales song. I posted it today on my Twitter and Facebook author page. For some reason I’m having trouble getting it on my website, but I am determined! You did great! Thanks, Debbie
Dear Judah, I’m so glad you are enjoying the Bailey School Kids books. The ideas for the monsters came from lots of different places-vampires were the scariest monster to me when I was a kid. Mummies Don’t Coach Softball came from a visit to the Field Museum in Chicago. Bigfoot Doesn’t Square Dance from a newspaper article. Do you have a favorite BSK story? Did you know the series has been optioned for a TV series? It would be fun to see. It’s cool that we’re both from KY. I grew up in Henderson, but I lived in Lexington before I started moving around the country with my husband (for his job).
Ella, the name Blue would also be a good first name. You are so clever! Swim free, Debbie
Dear Ella, It would be fun to have a surprise birthday party for Mrs. Karp wouldn’t it? One time I toyed with the idea of Mrs. Karp being a body guard sent to watch over Princess Shelly. Narca Blue is a fun idea! I will put it with my Mini Mermaid Tales ideas. Thanks, Debbie
Dear Kimberly, Mermaid Crunsh is a great name! Wouldn’t it be fun for St. Valentine’s Day? I hope your school librarian will get #14, Twist and Shout for you. She or he should definitely get Books vs Looks!
Ella, you are right about Shelly. So far the Mermaid Tales books celebrate two birthdays, Echo’s in Battle of the Best Friends and Shelly’s in the upcoming Sleepover at the Haunted Museum. Should I do another birthday book? Happy 2021, Debbie
Dear Ella, I’ve often wondered if mermaids celebrate the same holidays as we do on dry land. What do you think? The next mermaid book I am writing will be about a mermaid named Poppy who wants to be a princess (she’s heard there’s one in Trident City). Do you know who the princess is? Best, Debbie
Dear Adeline, You must be a very good reader. When I was in first grade I could only read things like “See Spot. See Spot run!” I hope you are enjoying A Tale of Two Sisters. I always wanted a sister. I have two brothers. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Have a blessed week, Debbie
Dear Ella, Happy holidays to you as well. This is the first year we didn’t make a gingerbread house because we weren’t together. My kids loved doing silly things for the house, like having a snowman pooping!! I hope you didn’t do that! Hopefully after we get the vaccine we’ll be able to get together.
Guess what? My publisher picks the illustrator for my books. I don’t have anything to do with it. If you’d like to do pictures for the next MerStyle magazine that I can do. Guess what else? Bently and his family made a cool verse for Rocky in the Mermaid Tales song. I have to figure out how to share it. Have a great week, Debbie
Dear Bentley, Wow! That was super fast! Your adults can send it to me in care of my Facebook Author page or grown-ups can email me here. Ella, is hoping it doesn’t spoil any of Rocky’s secrets from The Secret Sea Horse. Happy Holidays, Debbie
