Dear Ella, I imagine it will be a while before I get to see any sketches of Aqua for the new series, Mini Mermaid Tales. I’ll share them when I get them.
We don’t get a lot of snow where I live, but we received about 5 inches yesterday! It’s a winter wonderland. Did you get any? Best, Debbie

Dear Ella, Guess what? I’ve been thinking about writing a new dragon story! Some of my other dragon stories are Dragons Don’t Cook Pizza and The Keyholder series. Dragons are great fun to write about!
But of course, so are mermaids! I do a character sketch before I start writing a new story to learn a bit about the character. I know that Aqua wishes she had a regular tail. Her’s is not blue and it’s not green-it’s a mix. We first find out that Rocky is adopted in the Winter Princess. Hope you have a great week! God bless, Debbie

Dear Lily, Hammerhead sharks are pretty cool, aren’t they? Which Mermaid Tales book did you read, Danger in the Deep Blue Sea?
Ella L, I’m glad you loved Books vs Looks. Aqua loves sea creatures, especially dolphins and she wants to ride one. Aqua could be adopted. Did you know that Rocky was? My youngest son was as well. Have a great weekend and stay warm, Debbie

Yes, Yuta is Kiki’s younger brother. For a while I thought he could come to Trident Academy to go to school, but that wouldn’t work because then he couldn’t be friends with the younger kids quite as easily. A visit would be best I think. Yuta gave Kiki the idea for the book club in Books vs Looks. Have a lovely and safe weekend. God bless, Debbie

Dear Ella, Aqua is definitely adventurous, but her older sister, Morgan, is not! That causes some problems. Yes, Morgan stutters a bit. In the pictures, she does not look Asian. Maybe Kiki’s younger brother should come for a visit? Love your ideas. Have a great day, Debbie

Dear Ella L, OOh, I do like Renee Kurilla’s illustrations. They are fun and colorful. I will pass her name on to my editor. Thanks for the suggestion! Aqua will have her own group of merfriends, but the older Mermaid Tales merkids will be friends too. Rocky, Morgan and Kiki are the first ones they meet. (Morgan is actually Aqua’s sister). Have a fintastic day, Debbie

Dear Jonathan, I have so many favorites! Right now, I’m very partial to Vampires Don’t Wear Polka Dots.

It was my first published book. I co-authored it with my friend, Marcia Thornton Jones. It’s exciting that it’s been optioned for a live TV series and in audio development, but I’ve also some other good news that I hope to be able to announce soon!
Ella L, I can’t wait either! That’s one of the hardest parts about being a traditional author. Usually it takes years before books come out. It takes time for good edits, finding an illustrator, and the illustrator’s actual work, and then the publishing. As far as I know there hasn’t been an illustrator selected yet. The art director and my editor will look at established children’s illustrators for work that they like. Any suggestions? I’m hoping there will be more Mermaid Tales (after #22) and that Aqua will be a part of the adventures. As with all publishing, it depends on the sales of the current books. Have a super fintastic week! Your friend, Debbie

Dear Ella, Aqua is younger than Kiki so they probably wouldn’t share a dorm room, but they do become friends in the second Mini Mermaid Tales book. In fact, Kiki teaches her to speak to dolphins. I’ll tell you a secret, in Mermaid Tales #22 Kiki does get a new roommate.(Unless it is changed-both of those books don’t come out unti next year). I’m glad you like Wanda. Pearl can be a stinker, but I like to think that deep deep down she is nice! Have a great weekend, Debbie

Dear Ella, Aqua will actually be featured in the second Mini Mermaid Tales book, but she’ll be introduced in the first one (unless my editor wants to change things.)
My grandmother, Lillie Bailey, was an amazing seamstress. She even sewed Barbie doll clothes for me. Maybe I got a little bit of her talent! The Bailey School Kids books I wrote with Marcia T. Jones were named after my grandmother. Stay safe and wear a mask in public, Debbie

Hey Ella, I actually made my mermaid tail myself, but I need to make a new one. It was damaged a while back. Guess what? In Mermaid Tales #22 (if my editor likes the manuscript), our merfriends have a close call with humans! I’m told they will probably pick a new illustrator, but I love Tatevik! She is awesome, so I would be happy for her to do the new series as well. You had great questions! Stay safe and wear a mask, Debbie
