“Dear Debbie, Thanks for having such a fun interactive website! I will be sure that my students will really enjoy visiting this year. I wanted to contact you regarding concern with your presentation. When you came to our school this year you introduced a slide by saying, “Are you ready to see the scariest thing I’ve ever drawn?” and then you proceeded to show a slide of a boy wearing a tutu. The majority of the students in gym/cafeteria then proceeded to laugh. I was very disappointed by this segment of your presentation. That day alone, you presented to somewhere between 700-1,000 kids. Do you know how many of those impressionable boys felt laughed at that day if they wanted to be a dancer? My concern is bigger than that… Statistically speaking 1 in every 10 children are gay and and estimated 2-5% of the population is transgendered. You just belittled them as they sat in a gym and heard others laugh at them! And my concerns don’t end there. Many of our students have gay relatives and with today’s changing families some of our students are begin raises in households with same-sex parents. While I’m not saying that all of these children or their relatives have an urge to dress out of their ‘gender-assigned’ clothes I was alarmed by how you mocked it and encouraged their peers and teachers to do the same. I’m not written this to attack you, I doubt you thought about how that one slide could impact a child’s self-concept and I wanted to bring it to your attention for future presentations. Thank you for your consideration, Marian ”
